BICSI preferred, but not required. CAT6 & general VDVS. Report Wednesday at 8am, Fort Leavenworth.

Dear VDVS Brothers and Sisters,

I’d like to congratulate the following individuals on their successful election as new officers of the IBEW Local 124 VDVS unit.

Chairman – Nick Evenson
Vice Chairman – Tony Ciafullo
Recorder – Chris Bock
Executive Committee - Chris Baker, Ryan Grove, Dan Lee, Pete Semadeni

Thank you to all that stepped up and ran for these positions.  Currently the job market is still on the mend.  The newly elected officers listed above are intent on working hard to not only maintain but increase the VDVS unit’s position in local 124 while the economy recovers and long needed jobs hopefully return.

Something the officers and I would all like to do is increase membership participation and involvement.  Traditionally only a small percentage of the VDVS unit actively participates on a regular basis.  Monthly unit meetings continue to have meager numbers of familiar faces that would like nothing more than to see a meeting hall full of members concerned about their future as Technicians.  The lack of participation makes one wonder if the VDVS unit has a legitimate future here at Local 124 or if it will just exist beneath the Inside Wireman classification until it fades away.  Does that statement concern or offend you?  Maybe it should, this unit could be so much more than it is if its members would simply get involved.

This unit could help steer how Local 124 addresses a piece of the industry that is growing more rapidly than most.  But without participation this unit will be at the hands of others or at the very least the hands of only those few who participate.  The choice is yours, stay quiet and uninvolved and let the chips fall where they may…..or come out, join your peers and help shape your future.  If you’re not willing to participate then at the very least tell us why so we can try and address it?

With more active members I believe that many opportunities could present themselves.  Your officers would have a greater ability to organize effective groups of members into committees and the like to address not only union participation but also gather input about our competition, our training needs, possible mentoring opportunities, etc.  Your officers would also have a stronger voice internally at local 124 to address your desires and needs as a unit.  The possibilities are endless when you have more involvement.  It’s simple logic that the more heads in the game the better the chances for new ideas and new ideas are precisely what we’re looking for.

When I took this position the biggest complaint I received was that a Wireman was your representative instead of a Technician.  I understood that opinion and have attempted to let that criticism drive me to do as much for this unit as I possibly could.  Even with the development of many new and exciting things, we still struggle to get anyone’s attention.

Brothers and Sisters I’ve been your representative for 6 years now.  I’ve done my best to advance this unit further into local 124 and the market.  Quite frankly, we need your help; your unit needs your help.  If we are to accomplish anything further, it’s going to take everyone.  I’m very concerned that this unit has hit a brick wall and the majority of its members just don’t care.  Please come out, get involved, participate, and help make a difference.
